The Culture of Magnetic Island - Past and Present

 

Magnetic Island Tourism acknowledges the ongoing traditional ownership of the island by the Wulgurukaba, "Canoe People" who call this island Yunbenun.

 

There is plenty to see and do on the island to get a taste of our multi-faceted cultural heritage.  Below are some items to start with.

You can learn more about the Wulgurukaba and the aboriginal culture of the island by visting the QPWS website at :

 Magnetic Island National Park.  
To learn more island history, enquire at the Magnetic Island Museum, in Picnic Bay. 

Visit the Magnetic Island History & Craft Centre - where you will find historic island buildings, a lovely gift shop of locally made crafts, and a wealth of information which is being conserved at the Magnetic Island Museum. Their ongoing projects include an oral history project, the preservation of important historical documents and items in their collection and special events.
